Alzheimer Respite Services - Available in Haldimand and Norfolk Counties
What are Alzheimer’s Respite Services?
Alzheimer’s Respite is a community based, in-home service offered by Aberdeen Health and Community Services. Even though the service is called Alzheimer’s Respite our program delivers temporary relief (respite) to families and/or caregivers of individuals with a diagnosis of dementia (not just Alzheimer’s).

What do Alzheimer’s Respite Services Include?
Skilled Respite Workers
Our Personal Support Workers are specially trained and understand the special physical and emotional needs of the individual with dementia. We will work with you to provide a specialized program of care and stimulation for the individual as well as needed relief for the family and/or caregiver.
Referral to Community Resources
| As a member of the health care team, the Supervisor of the respite program will consult with other health care professionals and refer to other community resources as required. Your consent to the referral is part of this process. |
How can I access the program?
You can call your local CCAC [home care] program or call our office directly.
Our Supervisor will arrange a home visit with you and your loved one and complete an assessment. If the program will meet your needs you and the supervisor will find a mutually agreeable time to start the service.
With the unique needs of individuals with dementia Aberdeen will work with you to make sure we have a good fit between our worker and the individual with dementia. Sometimes this can take some time. Do not be discouraged – we will work with you to have service in place as soon as possible.
How much does the service cost?
There is a small charge of $3.00 per hour for this service. You will receive a bill every month or you can arrange to pay one or more months at a time.
Support for Caregivers
| By receiving education, emotional support and relief, the family and/or caregiver can cope with the stress of living with, and caring for an individual with dementia. |
